Q&A: Jonathan Hill, Football Analyst

Working for a premier league football club felt like an incredible achievement, and he quickly realized that analysis was a perfect fit for him.

Were there any key figures at Blackburn Rovers who influenced you in those early days?

Jonathan acknowledges the influence of two key individuals during his time at Blackburn Rovers. Paul Brand, currently the Head of Analysis at Manchester United, taught him essential principles and behaviors of the role. Gary Bowyer, the U21s manager at the time, emphasized the importance of analysis and was a great mentor. Having their support and guidance made a significant impact on Jonathan’s confidence and growth.

How have attitudes towards analysis changed during the 12 years you’ve been working in the game?

According to Jonathan, attitudes towards analysis have undergone a significant transformation in recent years. Currently, the majority of head coaches invest the most time with analysts. The analysis department has become an integral part of the coaching team, with meetings and discussions forming a collective effort to prepare and influence players. As a result, analysts now have excellent career progression opportunities, often transitioning into roles such as Head of Recruitment or Sporting Director.

You’ve worked closely with Scott Parker at Fulham, Bournemouth, and Club Brugge. Could you tell us about your working relationship with him?

Jonathan developed a close working relationship with Scott Parker during their time at Tottenham, where Scott was coaching the Under 18s. Their shared understanding of the game and aligned values set the foundation for their partnership. Jonathan’s role as an analyst involves proactively supporting Scott, providing him with the tools he needs for team meetings, post-match analysis, and game preparations. Their collective approach aims to convince players of the most effective tactics and strategies.

How did you find the process of delivering messages to players at Club Brugge, where there was a different culture and language barrier?

Working at Club Brugge presented Jonathan and Scott with a unique challenge in terms of a different culture and language barrier. Despite the obstacles, they embraced the opportunity to learn and adapt. While they didn’t achieve the desired success during their time there, the experience provided valuable learning opportunities and aided their personal and professional growth.
