Vicarage Road: The Historical Home of Watford FC

Since 1922, Watford FC has called Vicarage Road their home. The club’s move to Vicarage Road marked a significant milestone in their history, leaving their previous ground, Cassio Road, behind. Vicarage Road has witnessed the ups and downs of the club, as well as its close association with one of the music industry’s giants, Sir Elton John. As a lifelong supporter and former chairman of the club, Sir Elton John’s impact on Watford FC is undeniable. In recognition of his invaluable contributions, one of the stands at Vicarage Road bears his name.

In their remarkable journey, Watford achieved promotion to the Premier League in the 2014-2015 season, narrowly missing out on the top spot by just a point. This promotion marked their return to the top flight after an eight-year absence. Vicarage Road, which has a rich history of hosting events such as greyhound racing and horse shows, welcomed back Premier League fans with excitement and anticipation.

Vicarage Road is a traditional four-sided ground with open corners, creating an intimate and passionate atmosphere. The absence of a running track or any space between the pitch and the fans adds to the intensity experienced by both home and away teams.

  • Vicarage Road Stand: Named for its location along Vicarage Road, this stand offers a divided seating arrangement. One half caters to the away fans, while the other half is dedicated to the family section of home supporters. Additionally, this stand provides facilities for disabled supporters from both home and away clubs.
  • The Rookery Stand: Completed in 1995, this two-tiered stand includes 164 units of affordable housing for the local community. It is the home supporters’ stand and is known for housing the most vocal Watford fans.
  • The Graham Taylor Stand: Renamed in 2014 to pay tribute to one of the club’s most successful managers, The Graham Taylor Stand features a distinctive wavy roof and two tiers. This stand accommodates executive boxes and the TV gantry, and it was partly funded through a loan from Elton John.
  • The Elton John Stand: Formerly known as The Main Stand, this stand underwent development in 2012 to increase its capacity to 3,000. It houses the changing rooms and the tunnel leading onto the pitch.
